These four magazines presented here all feature black American hip hop artists. “XXL” is one of the largest and most successful hip hop magazine companies in the world and for that reason and pattern of black Americans being featured on the front cover I shall also include a black American on my own front cover, for this I have chosen “50 cent”. By using black Americans this connotes
idolism. This is because 50 cent is one of the most successful hip hop artists ever and in the gangster streets of the hoods in America he represents the hip hop theme well. With the hip hop artists being black and the colour of the cover lines being white these are on the opposite side of the colour scale which makes the cover line stand out more, I will also include this in my magazine so my cover line will stand out and attract attention. I will also use a hip hop artist that is dressed smartly and appropriately much like kanye west in the magazine featured “XXL”. I will try to achieve this because I want the magazine to be accepted as “normal” much like the one featuring 50 cent and not a rough, violent and crime influenced theme much like the image used in “SCRATCH” used connotes these unappealing themes.

other subjects that relate to the hip hop scene like basketball. This is a very valued sport in hip hop society and is played by many artists in films, photographs and music videos. This is shown in the magazine here “SLAM” by featuring a Puff and cover line including the names of basketball players and text to tell the audience there is basketball in the content. I shall also add this into my magazine to help attract my target audience. This also connotes strength and power as almost every successful basketball player is tall and toned which relates to the hip hop world because every hip hop artist wants to be the biggest and the best. By using new clothing on the model, a bright background and an expensive car on the front cover on this magazine it helps to connote the wealthy ness of hip hop artists and represents what a hip hop artist’s lifestyle is like.
I will also use a large and bold mast head on the front cover of my magazine to again connote the wanting of hip hop artists to be seen as powerful and strong individuals or group. The name of my magazine will be ‘The Bronx’ because the origins of hip hop came from the city of ‘Bronx’ in New York City. In the early 70's, a Jamaican dj known as Kool Herc moved from Kingston to New York's West Bronx. Here, he attempted to incorporate his Jamaican style of dj which involved reciting improvised rhymes over the dub versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately, New Yorkers weren't into reggae at the time. Thus Kool Herc adapted his style by chanting over the instrumental or percussion sections of the day's popular songs. Because these breaks were relatively short, he learned to extend them indefinitely by using an audio mixer and two identical records in which he continuously replaced the desired segment. http://www.daveyd.com/raphist2.html

As this double page spread shows I shall set my layout as being jumbled and articles, images and cover lines to achieve attracting the right target audience. I think this connotes a teenager’s life of who I am aiming this
magazine at because it connotes untidiness. This connotation helps attract the target audience because a student’s life involves messy accommodation and jumbled up work from college or university like the jumbled up and messy arrangement of articles and images here. The dark colours also used here connotes the streets of poor places like ‘Bronx’ and I will use this theme as a lot of hip hop artists like 50 cent who are now very successful grew up in rough neighbourhoods of America and it will make my target audience feel more at one with the magazine and it will relate to the hip hop lifestyle on both sides, from the rough streets at the start of their career to flash cars, big houses and all the money they could ever wish for.

These fonts are the prototypes of the style of font I will be using in the masthead for my magazine. I have chosen these fonts as they’re graffiti styled fonts which connotes roughness, this is just like street life in rough, poor neighbourhoods of where the majority of successful hip hop artists were raised. Graffiti is also used on surfaces like walls a lot to represents a person or gang of people as you can see in this video link http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UlP10-CLCq4&feature=related This is because in these
areas there is a lot of conflict over who’s the biggest and the best just like in hip hop and where there is a battle to be the best too and by using this as the font for
my masthead it will represent the mark being placed on the magazine by hip hop as a whole. My target audience being young 16-25 year olds who like the music genre hip hop means that I will include everything that suits the theme of a hip hop artist’s lifestyle from rags to riches. This means I shall use images to connote violence. This is like the violence on the rough streets like bullets and guns in the pictures shown. Violen

lot of hip hop artist’s lives, I know this because as you can see in the images shown that how ever rich or how ever much their lives may change that hip hop artists are with their gangs for ever. This is also a part of hip hop culture that will never die out and I will use this theme throughout my front page and double page spread to show that hip hop and the magazine are here for ever.
