research and planning

These four magazines presented here all feature black American hip hop artists. “XXL” is one of the largest and most successful hip hop magazine companies in the world and for that reason and pattern of black Americans being featured on the front cover I shall also include a black American on my own front cover, for this I have chosen “50 cent”. By using black Americans this connotes idolism. This is because 50 cent is one of the most successful hip hop artists ever and in the gangster streets of the hoods in America he represents the hip hop theme well. With the hip hop artists being black and the colour of the cover lines being white these are on the opposite side of the colour scale which makes the cover line stand out more, I will also include this in my magazine so my cover line will stand out and attract attention. I will also use a hip hop artist that is dressed smartly and appropriately much like kanye west in the magazine featured “XXL”. I will try to achieve this because I want the magazine to be accepted as “normal” much like the one featuring 50 cent and not a rough, violent and crime influenced theme much like the image used in “SCRATCH” used connotes these unappealing themes.

I shall also include other subjects that relate to the hip hop scene like basketball. This is a very valued sport in hip hop society and is played by many artists in films, photographs and music videos. This is shown in the magazine here “SLAM” by featuring a Puff and cover line including the names of basketball players and text to tell the audience there is basketball in the content. I shall also add this into my magazine to help attract my target audience. This also connotes strength and power as almost every successful basketball player is tall and toned which relates to the hip hop world because every hip hop artist wants to be the biggest and the best. By using new clothing on the model, a bright background and an expensive car on the front cover on this magazine it helps to connote the wealthy ness of hip hop artists and represents what a hip hop artist’s lifestyle is like.

I will also use a large and bold mast head on the front cover of my magazine to again connote the wanting of hip hop artists to be seen as powerful and strong individuals or group. The name of my magazine will be ‘The Bronx’ because the origins of hip hop came from the city of ‘Bronx’ in New York City. In the early 70's, a Jamaican dj known as Kool Herc moved from Kingston to New York's West Bronx. Here, he attempted to incorporate his Jamaican style of dj which involved reciting improvised rhymes over the dub versions of his reggae records. Unfortunately, New Yorkers weren't into reggae at the time. Thus Kool Herc adapted his style by chanting over the instrumental or percussion sections of the day's popular songs. Because these breaks were relatively short, he learned to extend them indefinitely by using an audio mixer and two identical records in which he continuously replaced the desired segment. http://www.daveyd.com/raphist2.html

As this double page spread shows I shall set my layout as being jumbled and articles, images and cover lines to achieve attracting the right target audience. I think this connotes a teenager’s life of who I am aiming this magazine at because it connotes untidiness. This connotation helps attract the target audience because a student’s life involves messy accommodation and jumbled up work from college or university like the jumbled up and messy arrangement of articles and images here. The dark colours also used here connotes the streets of poor places like ‘Bronx’ and I will use this theme as a lot of hip hop artists like 50 cent who are now very successful grew up in rough neighbourhoods of America and it will make my target audience feel more at one with the magazine and it will relate to the hip hop lifestyle on both sides, from the rough streets at the start of their career to flash cars, big houses and all the money they could ever wish for.

These fonts are the prototypes of the style of font I will be using in the masthead for my magazine. I have chosen these fonts as they’re graffiti styled fonts which connotes roughness, this is just like street life in rough, poor neighbourhoods of where the majority of successful hip hop artists were raised. Graffiti is also used on surfaces like walls a lot to represents a person or gang of people as you can see in this video link http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=UlP10-CLCq4&feature=related This is because in these areas there is a lot of conflict over who’s the biggest and the best just like in hip hop and where there is a battle to be the best too and by using this as the font for my masthead it will represent the mark being placed on the magazine by hip hop as a whole.

My target audience being young 16-25 year olds who like the music genre hip hop means that I will include everything that suits the theme of a hip hop artist’s lifestyle from rags to riches. This means I shall use images to connote violence. This is like the violence on the rough streets like bullets and guns in the pictures shown. Violence is also a second part of a lot of hip hop artist’s lives, I know this because as you can see in the images shown that how ever rich or how ever much their lives may change that hip hop artists are with their gangs for ever. This is also a part of hip hop culture that will never die out and I will use this theme throughout my front page and double page spread to show that hip hop and the magazine are here for ever.

Evaluation For Video

My media product does not break the 180 degree rule in any way which uses the form of convention of this rule in other media products. This is used so when the shot cuts from one to another the camera sees the people in the shot on the same angle each time to stop confusion by the audience making it look like the people have changed positions.

It also uses the form and convention of real media products as it follows the match on action rule. I have acheived this by making each shot when cut, look like one continuous scene.

My media product is also made for teenage viewing but on the other hand the terminology used suggests an alternative look on teenages as some is quite advanced like the word "approximatley" is used where as usual teenagers use simple, short words and dialouge.

The type of media institution most likely to use and distribute my media product would be BBC2 as this particular programme distributes many documntaries and the most out of the terresrial channels. This would be appropriate for my media product as it has a documentary/interview theme to it.

The simple and plain terminology and setting to the video suggests the target audience should be of a younger age so that it is easier for them to understand. Because I stuck to the 180 degree rule and match on action it mant it wouldn't become complicated for younger people to undertand the positioning and angles of the characters and objects involved in the framing.

I used Adobe Premier Pro 2 to edit my video and make necessary changes to it which I found made aot of difference from the start and the end peice created from the use of the preogramme. I think this because it enbaled me to make the video look like one continuous scene and being able to keep my audience's attention on the video. We also named each clip to organise each one so it enabled us to not miss use any of our clips in the wrong places and overall saving us time.

Plan For Location, Camera Positions And Camera Movements Of Interview

The location of my interview will be set where there are two chairs placed to the rear of a door to enable a person to walk throught he door and immediatley recognising the other person sat on the chair.

I will use a tracking shot to follow the person walking up to the door from the right hand side. I will then use an extreme close-up of the person placing their hand on the handle, pushing it down and pushing it until the door is aboput 2 feet open then I will cut. Whilst filming this from the point where the person pushes the handle down i will zoom out on them.

Next I will proceed to filming from the room that the person awaiting the interview in and from where they would be sat, this creates a point of view shot and a low angle shot to show the position of the person on the chair being lower down than the one coming through the door.

As the person walks into the room I will go from the cut of opening the door 2 feet and carry out the rest of the walk into the room and then use an extreme close-up on the handle when the force is applied to the door to shut it into the lock.

Now I will use a tracking shot to follow the person to their chair and until they sit down where I will cut to an over the shouler shot of the person who is sat down where they will greet the person who was sat waiting for them. Then I will change the shot to an over the shoulder shot of the person greeting the person who came throught the door back.

I will now alternate the shots to over the shoulder shots for the two questions they will be discussing to when the person who is asking the question the shot will be over the shoulder at the person listening. Then, when the other person is replying to the question it will be an over the shoulder shot at the person who asked the question and who is recieving the answer.

I will finally use a couple shot to film the two people shaking hands and saying goodbye.

180 dgree rule and match shots

The 180 degree rule is the rule that once you've done the master shot you cannot cross the line of 180 degrees.

Match shot is the making of two shots to match and look like a continuous scene.

This particular magazine is aimed at college students and is easily noticible by the bold mast head in the centre of the front page with the name "The College Issue".

Another factor that would attract the target audience of college students is the scrap book effect on the cover of random photographs, colour, and text in all different shapes and sizes. This represents a students scrap book or a collage effect being like a piece of work.

The photos include younger people so they immediately know it is aimed at their age group andthe kind of people that would read it.

Beat magazine also has the same target audience as the first magazinen being teens/students.
I notice that the mast head which is always the largest text on the cover of the magazine has been covered up by a young, attractive woman looking sexually appealing as she is wearing nothing on the top half of her body. This factor would increase the number of male buyers as at this age they've not long become sexually active.
By having the name of a very famous person in bold attracts the attention of young females because of her popular music making towards the audience of younger people and for the males because "Jennifer Lopez" is associated with being a very good looking young woman.
By including in bold, bright writing the fashions that are coming in for the next season approaching it attracts the attention of female students who most all of them are interested in fashion and are very concious about what they look like so this advertisement is basically saying to buy the new fashion.

Audience Profile
The reader is of the male gender. He is at sixth form college. He is a regular 16-18 year old boy who enjoys all the things in life that everyday college students enjoy like drinking, sex and going out with friends into town at the weekends. He is also looking for his ideal girl to start dating and needs help on trying to find her. He also wants to start to learn to drive as he has just passed his 17th birthday and has had his first car off his parents for his main birthday present. He would like all of the latest fashion and designer clothes and the latest music in the charts right now. He would over all be laid back in the week and come alive at the weekend and be out going and always up for a laugh.
